The relationship between President Donald Trump and former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has been tumultuous. While Romney initially criticized Trump during the 2016 election, the two appeared to have made amends when Trump considered Romney for Secretary of State. However, tensions rose again when Romney criticized Trump’s response to the violence in Charlottesville in 2017. Romney was later elected to the Senate and has been a vocal critic of Trump’s policies and behavior. Trump, in turn, has attacked Romney on Twitter and referred to him as a “pompous ass.” Despite their differences, both men have expressed a willingness to work together on certain issues.
